A lot of people assume a driveway clean is just a jet wash, and that any improvement it makes is temporary because "it always comes back". It does come back if that's all that's done - a pressure wash alone strips the surface film off but leaves algae spores and weed roots very much alive in the joints, ready to regrow within a season, often faster than before because the surface has been roughed up.

Whatever's outside your front door, the approach starts with identifying the actual surface and its condition before any water or chemical goes near it - that's what decides whether it's a straightforward clean and seal or something that needs re-sanding, crack treatment or oil stain work first. We'll tell you which on the visit, not guess from a photo.

Water Supply and Site Requirements

We carry water where needed but an outside tap makes for a quicker, more efficient job, so let us know if one's available when you book. Power isn't usually required for domestic driveway cleaning since our equipment runs from the van, which also means no cables trailing across a wet surface while we work.

Covering a Wide Stretch of the North East

We work driveways across a roughly 45-mile radius from our Washington base, which takes in Durham and a large stretch of the surrounding North East. Wherever you are in that area, the same treatment, cleaning and sealing process applies - it's not a scaled-down service the further out you are.

Slip Risk and Health & Safety Obligations

Algae, moss and oil residue on a commercial surface aren't just cosmetic issues, they're a genuine slip hazard that businesses have a duty to manage for staff and visitors. Regular treatment and cleaning is a straightforward, low-cost way to reduce that risk rather than waiting for an incident to prompt it.

Matt Sealants

  • A matt sealant protects the surface, deepens colour slightly and locks jointing sand in place without giving the driveway a noticeably glossy look - a natural finish that suits most properties and is the more popular choice where you want protection without a visible change in appearance.

The Full Clean, Re-Sand and Seal Process

  1. 1

    Survey the surface

We identify the material - block paving, concrete, resin or tarmac - and check joints, cracks and staining before starting.

  2. 2

    Biocide treatment

A professional biocide is applied to kill weeds, algae and moss at the root, left to work before any cleaning begins.

  3. 3

    Pressure or rotary clean

The surface is cleaned with pressure or rotary equipment matched to the material, lifting dirt without damaging it.

  4. 4

    Re-sand the joints

Kiln-dried sand is worked into block paving joints and compacted, restoring stability and a finished look.

  5. 5

    Allow to dry fully

The surface is left to dry through properly - rushing this stage is the most common cause of sealant failure.

  6. 6

    Apply the sealant

A matt or wet-look sealant is applied evenly to protect the surface and slow down regrowth and staining.

Rotary Cleaning vs Standard Pressure Washing

A standard pressure washer lance is fine for a quick refresh but it cleans in stripes - uneven passes that leave faint tramlines on some surfaces, especially tarmac and softer resin finishes, and it can blast sand straight out of block paving joints if the operator isn't careful with distance and angle. It's quick, but it's a blunter tool than most driveways actually need.

A rotary surface cleaner spreads the same water pressure across a wide, even rotating head, so there's no striping and far less risk of joint damage or surface etching. We use rotary cleaning as standard on block paving and concrete, and drop to a gentler pressure-washed pass by hand on tighter edges, steps and areas the rotary head can't reach cleanly.

Driveway Cleaning & Sealing in Durham — common questions

Based in Washington and covering a 45-mile radius across the North East, we bring proper training - biocide, asbestos awareness and spill management - to every driveway job in Durham, whatever the surface or condition.

Algae, moss, weeds and oil staining don't fix themselves, and a quick rinse only holds them off for a few weeks. Proper biocide treatment, cleaning matched to the surface, re-sanding and sealing is what actually keeps a driveway looking right.
