The early signs are easy to spot from the street once you know what to look for: grass or small plants growing along the gutter line, water pouring over the front edge during heavy rain instead of running to the downpipe, or dark streaks running down the brickwork beneath the gutter.
Inside the house, a damp patch high on an outside wall or around a window reveal can also point to an overflowing gutter above. On terraces it is worth checking the back of the house too, because rear gutters over yards and offshoots are easy to forget and often block first.
