Getting rendered walls looking new again

Render that started out bright tends to turn patchy within a few years. Green bloom appears first on the shaded side of the house, then grey and black streaks form under window sills and along the top of the wall where rain runs off the roofline. Many owners are unsure how to put it right without damaging the finish, and that hesitation is understandable.

Our render cleaning removes the organic growth and dirt that causes the discolouration: green algae, lichen, fungi, moss, mould and general grime. We use the soft washing and steam method named in our service list, which cleans the surface without driving a hard jet of water into it.

Soft washing applies a dilute cleaning solution at low pressure. The solution works on the growth itself rather than just rinsing the visible layer away, and steam is used where heat helps to release stubborn deposits. The aim is a wall that looks clean, evenly coloured and cared for.

Why render changes colour

What turns render green, grey and black

Render holds a little moisture in its surface, and that damp film is exactly what algae and lichen need to take hold. Walls that get little direct sun, sit near trees or face the prevailing weather stay damp for longer, which is why one elevation of a house can look far worse than the others.

Once the first growth is established it traps more dirt, and the staining spreads. Streaks under sills and below gutters often come from water running off in the same line every time it rains, carrying spores and grime with it.

Cleaning the growth out rather than leaving it to build up keeps the render looking right and makes the next clean easier. If your gutters are overflowing onto the wall, it is worth clearing those at the same time so the streaks do not return straight away.
