Steelworks terraces and newer estates

Much of Consett's housing falls into two groups: rows of terraced houses from the steelworks era, and newer estates built on the former steelworks site. The terraces often have long continuous gutter runs across several houses and slate or tile roofs that have carried moss for years. The newer homes have concrete tiles that moss spreads across evenly.

Height and exposure mean Consett roofs see plenty of rain and wind. Moss holds that water against the tiles, and a frost expanding inside a saturated layer can lift and crack them. Clearing it, then applying a treatment intended to hold it off for up to three years, is the job we are asked for most here.
