uPVC cleaning across the North East

uPVC frames are sold as low maintenance, and they are, but they are not no maintenance. Over a few years the white plastic picks up a grey film of traffic dirt, green algae settles along the tops of frames and sills, and black marks gather in the corners and around the rubber seals.

PVC is one of the surfaces suited to soft washing, which uses a low pressure water system and a dilute solution to remove algae, mould and grime without harsh force. Purified water has had the dissolved minerals removed, so it does not dry onto the plastic or the glass as spots and streaks. No detergents are used on the glass, and everything is left to dry naturally. Frames and sills can be cleaned on the same visit as the windows, the conservatory or the fascias at the same address.

For light dirt on ground-floor frames, warm water with a little washing-up liquid and a soft cloth is enough. Work from the top of the frame down, clean the rubber seals with a soft brush, rinse with clean water and dry the sill so it does not streak. Avoid scouring pads, cream cleaners, bleach and solvents, which scratch or yellow the plastic and can make it attract dirt faster.

Where DIY stops working is green algae that keeps returning, black mould in corners and frames above the ground floor that you cannot reach safely. That is where uPVC cleaning with soft washing and purified water makes sense, as it treats the growth and reaches upstairs from the ground.

Cleaning removes what is sitting on the plastic: algae, traffic film, cobwebs and mould. uPVC restoration is a different job, aimed at frames that have gone chalky, faded or yellow because the surface itself has weathered.
