Newcastle has streets of tall Victorian and Edwardian terraces, and their gutters are hard to reach: high at the front, over offshoots and yards at the back. Tyneside flats, shared runs and back lanes
A large share of Newcastle's older housing is the Tyneside flat: two homes, one upstairs and one down, behind a pair of front doors, with a single gutter running along the whole frontage. In Heaton, Fenham, Sandyford and parts of Benwell, the upstairs owner often assumes the downstairs neighbour deals with the gutter and the other way round, so the run gets left for years. We can clear the full length for one owner, or for both if you agree to split it.
Most of these streets have a cobbled or tarmac back lane, and the rear gutter is reached from there with the gate open. Because the poles work from the lane, nobody needs to walk through either flat.
Gutter cleaning in Gosforth, Jesmond and the leafy north
Gosforth and Jesmond have large Edwardian and interwar houses with high eaves, bay roofs and plenty of mature trees, especially near Jesmond Dene and the Town Moor. Sycamore seeds and leaf litter pack those gutters every autumn, and the height puts most owners off doing it themselves.
