How Long Does Gutter Cleaning Take?

The four things that set the time

Length of guttering. Every extra metre of run adds time, and so does every separate section, because the equipment is moved and repositioned for each one. A house with a porch, bay, garage and rear extension has far more separate runs than a plain box shaped semi.

How much is in it. A gutter that was cleared last year may only hold a thin layer of leaves. One left for several years can be packed with compacted silt, moss and even small plants, which takes much longer to break up and remove.

Access. Clear paths down both sides of the house make a big difference. Narrow back lanes, locked gates, tight gaps between houses and planted borders under the gutter all add minutes to each run.

Downpipes. If water will not drain after the gutter is empty, the downpipe has a blockage, and clearing that is extra work on top of the gutter itself.

Why vacuum clearing is quicker than ladders

With ladders, the cleaner climbs, scoops what they can reach, climbs down, moves the ladder and repeats. On a two or three storey house that is a lot of climbing. A high reach vacuum works from the ground, so the operator simply walks the pole along the run. There is no ladder to move every couple of metres and nothing leaning on the gutter.

The camera on the pole also saves time, because checking the inside of a run takes seconds on a screen rather than another trip up a ladder.

Why the quickest visit is not always the best

A clean that is finished in fifteen minutes on a large house has probably skipped the rear gutters, left silt in the outlets, or not checked the downpipes. A proper job covers every run, finishes with water able to drain, and lets you see the before and after. That takes as long as it takes, and it is worth it.

How you can help it go faster

Unlock side gates or leave them open, move cars off the drive if they sit under the gutter, and bring in anything fragile standing below the roofline, such as pot plants or garden ornaments. If there is a neighbour whose yard gives the only access to a rear gutter, a quick word with them beforehand saves a wasted trip.

Adding other jobs to the same visit

Soft washing the fascias and soffits or cleaning a conservatory roof alongside the gutters adds time, but far less than booking a second visit, because the equipment is already on site and set up. If you are thinking about either, mention it when you ask for a quote.
