For most UK homes, solar panel cleaning is worth it if panels are visibly soiled, low-pitched, or in a high-grime location, but it's rarely urgent and almost never worth doing on a fixed schedule regardless of condition. Rain does a surprisingly good job on steeply pitched panels, so the value of a professional clean depends heavily on your specific roof.

The short answer: it depends on pitch, location and soiling
Panels mounted at a steep pitch in a rural or suburban area with regular rainfall are largely self-cleaning; grime, pollen and light dust wash off naturally most of the year. Panels on a shallow pitch, near busy roads, under trees, close to farmland, or in areas with heavy bird activity accumulate a stubborn film that rain alone won't shift.
If you can see a visible grey or green haze across the panel surface, or bird droppings sitting on cells, that's a reasonable trigger to consider a clean. If they look clean from ground level, cleaning them is unlikely to move the needle.
Roughly how much output is lost to dirt
Light dust and general grime typically knock a few percent off output, often in the low single digits annually for a well-pitched, rain-washed array. Heavier soiling, bird mess, or a build-up of moss and algae at panel edges can cause more localised losses, and shading from debris at the base of panels can disproportionately affect a whole string's output because of how panels are wired.
The point is that dirt loss is rarely dramatic for most domestic arrays, which is exactly why cleaning has to be judged case by case rather than assumed to always pay for itself.

If cleaning genuinely recovers a modest percentage of output on a system generating meaningful income or savings through the year, the payback can be reasonable, particularly on export-tariff systems or larger commercial arrays where even small percentage gains multiply across bigger numbers.
For a small, steep, well-rinsed residential array, the honest math often doesn't strongly favour frequent cleaning. For a large or shallow-pitch commercial roof, or one under trees, it usually does.
What a proper clean involves
Panels should be cleaned with pure or deionised water and soft brushes, never a pressure washer, which can crack seals, force water under frames, or damage the anti-reflective coating. Anyone turning up with a domestic jet wash for solar panels is a red flag, not a bargain.
