Solar panels are, obviously, electrical equipment, and working around them at roof height combines two separate risk factors: fall risk from height and the presence of live electrical components. Ground-based cleaning using extendable poles avoids the need to walk on the roof or near the panels directly, which is the safer approach for most routine cleaning and is how the majority of professional solar panel cleaning is done.

For panels on complex or very steep rooflines where ground-based reach genuinely isn't sufficient, a professional with appropriate access equipment and awareness of electrical safety around the installation should be brought in, rather than attempting DIY ladder access near live panels.

How often should solar panels be cleaned?

Most UK installations do reasonably well with cleaning once or twice a year, since rain provides a degree of natural rinsing between visits, though properties near busy roads, under trees, or in areas with significant bird activity may benefit from more frequent attention. Monitoring your system's output data, where available, is a genuinely useful way to spot a noticeable, sustained dip that suggests cleaning is overdue, rather than cleaning on a fixed schedule regardless of actual need.
