Self-cleaning coatings for solar panels are marketed as a set-and-forget solution, promising rain alone will keep panels performing at their best without ever needing manual cleaning again. It is a tempting pitch, but the reality is more limited than the marketing suggests, and most solar panel manufacturers and installers still recommend periodic manual cleaning regardless of coating.
Here is what these coatings genuinely achieve, where they fall short, and why manual cleaning still has a place even on treated panels.
What self-cleaning coatings actually do
These coatings are typically hydrophobic treatments applied to the panel surface, designed to make water bead and roll off more readily, taking loose dust and light dirt with it rather than letting it settle and streak. In light rain and on panels with a reasonable pitch, this genuinely does help keep general dust at bay to some degree.
What it does not do is remove bird droppings, tree sap, moss establishing at panel edges, or the general grime and pollution film that builds up over months, none of which a light water-repellent coating is designed to shift on its own.
Why manual cleaning is still recommended
Even coated panels accumulate dirt that rain alone cannot remove, and solar panel output is measurably reduced by dirt and shading, sometimes significantly on panels that have gone a year or more without any attention. Most manufacturers' maintenance guidance still recommends periodic cleaning as standard practice, coating or not, precisely because a coating slows dirt build-up rather than eliminating the need to address it.
Bird droppings in particular are a specific problem coatings do not solve, they can cause localised hot-spotting on a panel cell if left, which in some cases can affect panel performance or longevity beyond just the visible mess.
How often panels genuinely need cleaning
For most UK roofs, an annual clean is a reasonable baseline, more often for panels near trees, under flight paths with more bird activity, or in areas with higher airborne dust or agricultural spray drift nearby. A pure water pole system, the same technology used for window cleaning, works well on solar panels, delivering a thorough, streak-free clean without the scratching risk that abrasive brushes or the wrong cleaning products can cause.
Panels should never be pressure washed, the high pressure risks damaging seals and the panel surface itself, and manufacturers generally specify low-pressure, soft-bristle or pure water cleaning methods in their care guidance.
Are coatings worth applying at all?
Coatings are not a waste of money, they do genuinely reduce general dust and light dirt build-up and can modestly extend the interval between cleans, which has some value. The mistake is treating a coating as a substitute for cleaning altogether rather than a complement to it.
If you already have coated panels, stick to a periodic clean roughly annually, and if you are considering a coating, view it as a nice-to-have that slightly reduces maintenance frequency rather than one that removes the need for it.
