Chalky, Faded uPVC: Can It Be Restored?

White uPVC that used to gleam can turn a dull, powdery grey over the years, and if you run a finger across it and it comes away with a chalky residue, that is a clear sign of what has happened. It is a very common question from homeowners who assume the frames or fascias simply need replacing.

Why uPVC chalks and fades in the first place

uPVC is a plastic, and like most plastics left outdoors, UV exposure gradually breaks down the surface layer over time in a process called oxidation. This shows up as a chalky, powdery residue and a duller, often slightly yellowed or greyed appearance compared to the original bright white finish. Ordinary grime and algae can make faded uPVC look even worse, but the underlying chalkiness is a different problem from surface dirt, which is why a normal wash alone rarely brings the original finish back.

Cheaper, thinner-walled uPVC profiles, common on some older extensions and conservatories, tend to chalk and yellow noticeably faster than the higher-grade profiles used on newer replacement windows, which is why two properties of a similar age can look very different in how far the fading has progressed.

The restoration process

Restoration starts with a thorough clean to remove dirt, algae and as much of the loose chalky oxidation as possible, followed by application of a dedicated uPVC restorer or protectant designed to fill and seal the degraded surface layer. Done properly, this can noticeably brighten and refresh frames, fascias and soffits, and typically costs a good deal less than replacement.

For a typical semi-detached property, a full uPVC restoration treatment on windows, doors and roofline generally runs somewhere in the region of £200 to £450, depending on how much uPVC there is and how far gone the oxidation is.

When restoration works, and when it doesn't

Restoration gives the best results on moderately faded uPVC where the oxidation is a surface issue rather than deep degradation. Where the plastic has become brittle, cracked, or badly discoloured with yellowing that will not lift, a restorer coating will improve the look temporarily but will not last, and honestly it is fairer to say so upfront rather than sell a treatment that will disappoint within a year. Door frames and cills, which take more physical contact and weathering than window frames, often show this more advanced wear first.

In those more advanced cases, replacement of the affected frames or fascias is usually the better long-term investment, even though it costs more initially. A simple scratch test with a fingernail on an inconspicuous section gives a reasonable early indication of which category a property falls into before committing to either route.

Keeping restored uPVC looking good

Once restored, an annual wash keeps grime and algae from building back up and dulling the protective coating, and reapplying the restorer every couple of years maintains the finish rather than letting it slide back to square one.

A pure water window and frame clean alongside the restoration schedule helps too, since it stops the fine grime that dulls a restored finish from building up between the less frequent restorer applications.
