The sunlight and moisture mechanism
In the northern hemisphere, north-facing surfaces receive little to no direct sun for most of the year, since the sun tracks across the southern part of the sky. Without that direct sunlight, moisture from rain, condensation and morning dew sits on the wall surface far longer before evaporating compared to a south-facing wall baking dry within an hour or two of sunrise.
Green algae is a simple organism that needs moisture and some light, but not necessarily much light or warmth, to photosynthesise and spread, which makes a consistently damp, cool, partially shaded surface close to ideal for it, even without direct sun.
Why render and pebbledash make it worse
Textured surfaces like pebbledash and rough render have far more surface area than smooth brick or painted masonry, giving algae spores many more tiny crevices to settle into and establish a foothold. Porous render also absorbs and holds moisture within the material itself rather than letting it run off quickly, extending the damp period even after the surface appears dry to the touch.

Trimming back any nearby trees, shrubs or hedges close to a north wall improves air circulation and reduces the amount of extra shade and moisture retention around the base of the wall.
Improving drainage away from the wall base, clearing any blocked gutters overhead that might be adding extra water down the wall face, and ensuring render or pointing isn't cracked and trapping moisture all help address the underlying moisture problem rather than just the visible symptom.
Why it's worth treating rather than ignoring
Beyond the cosmetic issue, algae and moss holding moisture against a wall over years can gradually contribute to problems with render adhesion, pointing degradation, and in more severe cases penetrating damp on the inside face of the wall, particularly on older properties with less effective damp-proofing. It's rarely urgent in the way a leaking roof is, but it's not purely an appearance issue either, which is worth bearing in mind if a north wall has been left untreated for many years.
A periodic soft wash, even just every few years rather than as often as sun-exposed elevations might need, keeps the moisture and organic build-up from compounding into a bigger, more expensive problem down the line.
