Why Deionised Water Cleans Windows Better

Deionised water cleans windows better than ordinary tap water because it removes the dissolved minerals responsible for the hard water spots and streaks that plague traditional cleaning methods, allowing windows to air-dry naturally without any residue left behind. It's the reason modern water-fed pole window cleaning has largely replaced the traditional squeegee-and-bucket approach for exterior work.

There's more than one way to purify water for this purpose, and understanding the difference between deionisation and reverse osmosis helps explain why professional systems are set up the way they are.

What deionisation actually does

Deionisation, or DI, passes water through resin beads that exchange dissolved mineral ions in the water for hydrogen and hydroxide ions, effectively stripping out the calcium, magnesium and other salts that cause spotting. The result is water with a Total Dissolved Solids reading close to zero, meaning nothing is left behind to dry as a visible residue on the glass.

DI resin has a finite capacity and needs replacing or regenerating once it's exhausted, which is why professional operators monitor TDS readings and swap resin on a schedule rather than waiting for spotting to reappear on customers' windows.

DI versus reverse osmosis systems

Reverse osmosis, or RO, works differently, forcing water through a fine membrane that physically filters out dissolved solids and other impurities, producing purified water as well but through a mechanical filtration process rather than an ion-exchange one. Many professional systems combine both, using RO to remove the bulk of dissolved solids cost-effectively before a final DI polishing stage achieves that last stretch down to near-zero TDS.

RO systems tend to waste some water in the filtration process and work more slowly, while pure DI systems are faster and simpler but the resin needs replacing more frequently on harder water; combining the two balances speed, water efficiency and cost for regular professional use.

Why this actually produces a better clean, not just a different one

Beyond eliminating spotting, pure water cleaning reaches window frames, sills and glass edges more thoroughly than a squeegee, which mainly worked the flat glass surface, because the brush and pole system scrubs the whole unit as it goes. It's also inherently safer for upper-storey and hard-to-reach windows, since the extendable pole lets the cleaner work from the ground rather than needing a ladder against the glass.

The net result is a cleaner that dries spot-free without wiping, covers more of the window unit thoroughly, and does it more safely, which is why it's become the standard professional method rather than a niche alternative.

The role of the brush, not just the water

It's worth noting that deionised water alone isn't the whole story: the soft-bristled brush on the end of the pole is doing genuine mechanical scrubbing work as the pure water flows through it, loosening dirt and grime from the glass surface before the water rinses it away. This combination, gentle mechanical agitation plus mineral-free rinse water, is what produces a genuinely clean result rather than just a spotless one; pure water on its own without the brushing action would rinse but not properly clean heavily soiled glass.

That's why the water-fed pole system as a whole, brush and pure water together, outperforms either element alone, and why the two need to be used together rather than treating deionised water as a standalone magic ingredient.
