Orange-gloved hand removing leaves from a gutter beside roof tiles

Gutter cleaning in Stockton-on-Tees, cleared and filmed

Gutter cleaning in Stockton-on-Tees is done the same way we do it everywhere: a powerful vacuum on sectional poles, worked from the ground, with a camera on the pole so you can see the inside of the gutter before we start and again once it is clear. Stockton sits inside the area we cover from our Washington base, and we take on houses and commercial buildings across the town.

The point of the camera is simple. A gutter is above eye level, so most people never see what is actually in it. Watching the footage with you means you know what was removed, whether the run is now clear to the outlet, and whether there is anything else worth knowing about, such as a joint that is dripping or a bracket that has dropped.

Why Stockton gutters fill up

Stockton has a lot of mature trees along its older roads and parks, and a gutter under a sycamore or a horse chestnut can be full within one autumn. Elsewhere the problem is roof moss: it dries out in summer, breaks off, and washes into the gutter as a dark sludge that holds water and grows weeds. Both end up at the same place, which is the outlet above the downpipe.

When that outlet blocks, the gutter overflows in heavy rain. You might see water pouring over the front edge, a stain down the brickwork, or a damp patch inside on the top floor. Clearing the run and the top of the downpipe is usually what puts it right.

How the job runs

We look at the gutter with the camera first, then work along the run with the vacuum, emptying it into the machine rather than onto your garden or drive. The tops of the downpipes are cleared as part of the job. Then the camera goes back along the run so you can see it clear. Nobody needs to climb onto the roof, and no ladder rests on the gutter itself.

If water is still backing up because the blockage is further down the pipe, that is a separate issue. Our page on blocked downpipes explains what is involved, and the gutter camera check page covers what the footage can show when you just want to know what is up there.

Houses, flats and commercial buildings

Ground-level poles reach the gutters on most two and three storey houses, which covers the terraces, semis and detached homes that make up much of the town. For shops, offices, warehouses and other premises, see our commercial gutter cleaning page. Larger buildings often have long runs and several outlets, and the camera footage gives a property manager a record of the work.

You can read more about the equipment on our gutter vac clearing page, and our Stockton-on-Tees area page lists the other work we do in the town.

Leaves, moss and the timing of a clear

Stockton gutters often need doing at a different time from one house to the next. A home with a big tree over the back garden is best cleared once the leaves have fallen, while a house with an open outlook may only collect moss and grit and can be done at any point in the year. If you are not sure which applies to you, describe what is around the house when you get in touch and we will suggest a sensible time.

Clearing the gutter does not stop a mossy roof shedding into it again, so if the roof is the main source, it is worth asking about that too.
