North Shields climbs steeply up from the Fish Quay, and its tall Victorian terraces and town houses make gutter cleaning a job for ground-level equipment. Many frontages are three storeys over a basement, on sloping streets where a ladder is difficult to place safely. Our vacuum works from the pavement or yard, and the pole camera shows you the inside of the run before and after.
Coastal gutters here collect windblown sand and grit on top of the usual leaves and roof moss, settling into a heavy sludge that holds water. On a tall house the first sign is often a stain tracking down the wall, long after the blockage formed. The vacuum draws all of it down into the machine rather than dropping it onto the paths below.
Terraces, back lanes and shared runs
The streets above the town centre and out towards Preston and Chirton are mostly terraced, with back lanes giving access to the rear. Rear gutters are cleared from the lane with the yard gate open, so nobody needs to come through the house. Long runs shared between several homes are emptied along their full length, since debris in a neighbour's section still blocks the outlet you share.
Tynemouth's crescents and older semis, a mile east, have the same coastal grit plus heavier leaf fall where streets are tree-lined. Both towns are covered on the same visits.
The Fish Quay and the bank top
Down at the Fish Quay, converted warehouses and older commercial buildings have high rooflines directly on the street, where clearing from the pavement keeps the job tidy and off the road. Up the bank, the grid of terraces between the town centre and Tynemouth Road shares the sloping-street problem: the pavement falls away, the yards are narrow, and ground-level poles are simply the practical way to reach the gutters.
Properties facing the Tyne catch wind straight off the river as well as the sea, so grit and leaf litter arrive from both directions across the year.
What the camera shows
After vacuuming, the camera travels the run and shows you it is empty. It also shows the condition of joints and brackets. We do not carry out gutter repairs, but if the footage shows a slipped joint or a sagging bracket you have clear evidence to show a fitter, and you know the overflow is not simply a full gutter.
